First, in the 1800s, famine and wars in Europe attracted massive waves of immigrants from there as well as Switzerland; and immigration has continued to this day. DETAILS

An abundance of US place names bears witness to Swiss settlers: Geneva (in 14 different US states!), Nueva Helvetia (later renamed Fort Sutter after its Swiss founder) in California, Bern in Indiana, New Bern in North Carolina, Bernstadt in Kentucky, New Glarus in Wisconsin, New St Gallen in W Virginia, Vevay and Switzerland County in Indiana, Tell City in Ohio, Grutli in Tennessee, Helvetia in W Virginia and Oregon, are just some examples.

    ~ 20-30 descendants around St. Louis

Panama Branch (1903);
Born in Fleurier, the original emigrant, Jules Alfred was a constant traveller, working as a watchmaker in France, Italy and England before emigrating to the US around 1903. In 1912, he moved the family to the Canal Zone in Panama. In the 1980s, his descendants returned the US.
