DEATHS

BURK— Mr. Gerrie Burk passed away
Saturday, July 20, 1974 in Vancouver after
a prolonged illness at 88 years of age. He
was the youngest son of prominent pioneer
residents Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Burk who came
to Prince Arthur's landing in 1874 from
Southern, Ont. Born in Port Arthur, he
resided here most of his life, moving to
the west coast after the death of his
wife, the former  Caroline Smallcombe in
1964. He enlisted with the Winnipeg Rifles
at the outbreak of hostilities in August
1914 and was taken prisoner on Easter
Sunday 1915. After a spectacular escape he
was rehabilitated home to a mititary
convalescence hospital. He was the local
indian superintendent in charge of Indian
Affairs from 1923 to 1959.  He  was
predeceased by a brother T. H. (Tom) Burk
in 1954. Survived by two daughters on the
west coast, Mrs Anne Beavor and Mrs.
Patricia Quintrell, and locally by a
nephew E. H. (Ed) Burk. Other nephews and
nieces also survive. He was a lifelong
friend of J. B. (Jack) McKirdy of Fort
William ward.  Funeral will be held
Wednesday in Vancouver.
